Overview
The Par Montana refinery is located along the Yellowstone River just outside of Billings, MT, the energy, healthcare and finance hub of the state. The manufacturing site is a key supplier of refined products to the Northern Rocky Mountain region, ranging from the Dakotas to eastern Washington. Completed in 1949, the Billings refinery employs about 320 people and has 80-100 contractors on-site on any given day supporting the operations.
The refinery has the capacity to process 63,000 barrels of crude oil from Canada and the Rocky Mountain region. The refinery team converts that crude into gasoline, distillate, asphalt and other products to serve regional demand.
“We are honored to be a part of the manufacturing landscape in Montana and are committed to fueling the adventures and everyday needs of the Rocky Mountain region.”
Our Beginnings
In 1947, land was purchased and plotted just outside of Billings, MT for the current refinery operations. The original 500 acre site along the banks of the Yellowstone River was purchased for about $61,000.
The location of the refinery was chosen because of its proximity to water, transportation and pipeline corridors. There was also a need in the industry to complete facilities that could produce higher octane fuels that were needed for vehicles with design modifications made during World War II. A refinery that could process 20,000 barrels of crude oil per day was ideal to meet the new fuel demands of the region. Over time, the refinery’s crude capacity has been expanded to 63,000 barrels per day to meet regional demand.
Who We Are
With the Rimrocks in the background and the Yellowstone River just outside of our operations, we are grateful to be a part of the southern Montana landscape and community. Yellowstone County boasts a population of 167,000 people and is the healthcare, finance, agriculture and energy hub of Montana. Rich in Western history, this area also sits on the doorstep of outdoor adventures large and small, including Yellowstone National Park.
Health, Safety & Environment
The Billings team is committed to operating in a manner that keeps our employees, contractors, neighbors and environment safe. Safety is our #1 priority and we do our part to keep the community safe. We regularly train our employees and contractors to ensure a strong capability to respond to operational emergencies, should they occur.
Over the past 20 years, the refinery has also stepped up its commitment to conservation. In 2005, the site received an international certification for using 110 acres of undeveloped land for educational and research purposes.
